Describe the objective and at least one feature of an informal assessment that you have designed.
One of the informal assessments that I have assigned for students is the daily reflection. This is where a question or task is proposed to the student, based on the knowledge that they have accessed in class. The objective of this assignment is to get the students thinking about what we talked about in class. A few examples would be:
"Design an organism: Draw and identify at least 5 physical characteristics of your living organism."
"Is a candle a living organism? Write a persuasive paragraph explaining your answer."
"What is the proper way to hold a microscope?"
"What is the only knob that you should NOT touch while using the high power objective on the microscope? Explain your answer."
"Write a poem about an organelle. Be sure to include its function. (5 line minimum)"
How have you been using the results of the assessments you've used to improve how you teach and what students learn?
The reflection allows me to see if the students are understanding what happened in the lesson prior. It gives me an opportunity as the teacher to assess whether or not we need to review a certain concept as a class or if a few students might need a little extra help. The questions are typically related directly to the objective of the lesson in which they were assigned.
What strategies has your CT suggested for providing students with guidance before they do the assignment to improve their performance? What about after the assignment?
My CT has advised me that it is important before ending the class that the students understand what the reflection is asking. A lot of times the students will write down the daily reflection, but not really understanding what is being asked. This hurts the main purpose of the assessment because they cannot do it properly and don't think about the lesson or what is being asked. After the assignment, if a lot of students struggled, sometimes its good to take a few minutes of class time to go over it. This also serves as a way to access prior knowledge.
